Social Welfare Centre

In 1977 a Day Care Centre was started by The Theosophical Society for young children from very poor backgrounds.  Today it is known as the Social Welfare Centre, which incorporates both a Day Care Centre and a Vocational Training Centre for women.

Day Care Centre

The Centre admits around 85 children aged between 2 and 5.  Classroom and outdoor activities are arranged, as well as field trips.  Importance is given to language development.  Intellectual, personal, physical and social development  are also given special emphasis.  A nutritious breakfast and midday meal are provided for the children, who are looked after by a staff of 4 teachers and 5 helpers.

Vocational Training Centre

The Vocational Training Centre provides training in vocational skills for adolescent girls and young women on the threshold of their working lives.  It consists of a Tailoring Unit and a Weaving Unit.  About 25 women are trained every year and complete a one year Certificate course in tailoring, with classes conducted by 2 teachers.

Free Medical Treatment

Free medical treatment is provided for mothers and children at the Social Welfare Centre with the assistance of the Theosophical Order of Service.
