Synopsis

We will begin with the obvious realization that we did not create ourselves and wondering why we have been created in this vast universe by the mysterious and conscious energies running the whole universe.

We will look at the common features of eternal wisdom as expressed in the two major spiritual traditions—Abrahamic (consisting of Judaism, Christianity and Islam) and the Indian (consisting of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism)—and also at some significant differences in their philosophical and theological formulations.  According to all the sages, the Divine spiritual energy is manifested at different levels in all the creatures in the universe. Focusing on human beings, one can say that each one of us is composed of two aspects, or two beings, one coming from the spiritual or Purusha side and the other from the material or Prakriti side.  Some classical designations of these two aspects are spiritual nature and carnal nature, Self and self; Real and Eternal Self and transient self; I and me; angelic nature and animal nature; higher nature and lower nature. In general the whole world is being run by the fears and desires of our carnal nature occupied with me-my-mine. The call from all the spiritual teachers is for us to become more and more aware of our spiritual nature and to serve its need to evolve back to the Source.

One universal lesson from all the teachers is that as long as I remain as I am I cannot come to the Truth or God or the Real.  What is recommended is the necessary journey of self-transformation.  In this course we will explore the various stages of this journey.

Suggested Readings

Since I have been wrestling for many decades with the subject for exploration in this course, several of my published books are recommended for reading.  Specifically,
Whispers from the Other Shore: Spiritual Search—East and West;
Wisdom of Patañjali’s Yoga Sutras;
The Yoga of the Christ;
Yoga and the Teaching of Krishna.

All of these books have also been published by the Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar.
In addition, I recommend my book The Bhagavad Gita: A Guide to Navigating the Battle of Life.
