Handling Stress in Today’s World
Retirement – Beyond the Visiting Card | Session 3
Wisdom For Living - Talk # 40
The world we live in today is undoubtedly more comfortable and connected than it was a few decades ago. Yet, paradoxically, we seem to be carrying far more stress.
Somewhere along the way, Growth, Success and Happiness have become intertwined. We are constantly encouraged to grow, achieve more, earn more, possess more and become more successful—with the assumption that happiness will naturally follow.
But does it?
Material things can certainly give us pleasure. A new possession, a promotion, a bigger home or a financial gain can make us happy—for a moment, a day or perhaps even a few days. But when the excitement fades, the mind begins looking for the next thing.
Could it be that we are searching for happiness in the wrong place?
This talk explores stress not merely as something to be managed, but as something to be understood. It looks at how our expectations, ambitions, comparisons, relationships, thoughts and our constant need to achieve can quietly become sources of stress.
The session draws upon nearly five decades of my own experience across entrepreneurship, leadership, social service, mentoring, spirituality and interactions with people from many walks of life. Having built and led organisations, created entrepreneurs, worked with institutions and communities, and spent the last several years in service and learning, I have come to appreciate that:
A meaningful life is not necessarily a stress-free life—it is a life in which we learn how to relate differently to stress.
I have also had the privilege of writing five books, each reflecting in its own way on life, leadership, spirituality and human growth.
My association with The Theosophical Society since 2010 has been an especially important part of this journey. Through years of volunteering, learning, facilitating the Wisdom for Living series, and listening to speakers and seekers from diverse fields, I have had the opportunity to explore one question repeatedly:
How can we live better—not merely live more?
Perhaps the answer begins when we stop looking outside ourselves for everything we believe will make us happy.
Growth is valuable.
Success is meaningful.
Material prosperity is useful.
But none of them, by themselves, can guarantee inner peace.
True happiness ultimately has an inner dimension.
This session is an invitation to pause, reflect and discover how we can handle the pressures of today's world with greater clarity, calmness and balance—and perhaps rediscover the happiness that was within us all along.
I look forward to sharing this journey with you on 22 August 2026.
